Nickel Panels for Large Radio Telescopes

Media Lario designs and manufactures nickel reflector panels for Large Radio Telescopes using a laminated structure process in combination with our unique and patented electron-forming process. The panels are most often made of nickel and then bonded to an Aluminum honeycomb core. They are then shipped for assembly at the telescope site into a dish-like structure for use collecting radio waves from space. The radio wavelengths collected are in the millimeter range and require demanding performance. The typical shape accuracy required is to be within 10 µm (millionths of a meter) over a 2 m² surface. Because of the size of the structures, weight is also a factor and our panels achieve a 10 kg per m² weight density.

Our field proven experience in projects of approximately 5,000 m² includes:

Glass panels for Cherenkov Telescopes

Media Lario’s glass panels for Cherenkov radiation telescopes have established our reputation in Gamma Ray astronomy. The panels are made with a laminate process composed of thin glass skins bonded to a lightweight core. They are then shipped for assembly at the telescope site into a dish-like structure for use collecting light from space. The telescopes require demanding performance. The typical shape accuracy required is to be within 10 µm (millionths of a meter) over a 2 m² surface. Because of the size of the structures, weight is also a factor and our panels achieve a 10 kg per m² weight density.
